April Seed Starting

As the frost thaws and the days grow longer, gardeners everywhere are eagerly anticipating the arrival of spring. It’s a time of renewal and growth, and proper preparation now can ensure a bountiful and beautiful garden in the months to come. Here are some essential tips to help you prepare your spring garden for success:

  1. Clean Up: Begin by clearing away any debris that has accumulated over the winter months. Remove dead leaves, branches, and any other clutter that may have gathered in your garden beds. This will not only make your garden look tidier but also reduce the risk of pests and diseases.
  2. Soil Preparation: Spring is the perfect time to assess the condition of your soil and make any necessary amendments. Test the pH level of your soil and add organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure to improve its structure and fertility. Turn the soil to aerate it and ensure that nutrients are distributed evenly. All winter, I save up organic matter from my Vitamix food digester and start working that into the soil.
  3. Plan Your Planting: Determine which plants you want to grow in your garden this spring and create a planting schedule. Consider factors such as sunlight requirements, spacing, and plant compatibility when designing your garden layout. Make sure to include a variety of flowers, vegetables, and herbs to attract pollinators and support a diverse ecosystem. I plant Nasturtium and Johnny Jump Ups to attract bees to help with pollination. Nasturtium are edible and make for great food presentation!
  4. Protect Against Pests: As temperatures rise, so does the activity of garden pests. Take preventive measures by installing physical barriers, such as row covers or netting, to keep pests away from your plants. You can also introduce beneficial insects like ladybugs or lacewings to help control populations naturally.
